Glenmark, Sun to sell generic version of Trileptal in US

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries separately announced that they received approval to sell generic versions of Novartis’ epilepsy drug Trileptal with a 180-day shared exclusivity in the US market.

MUMBAI: Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries separately announced on Tuesday that they received approval to sell generic versions of Novartis’ epilepsy drug Trileptal with a 180-day shared exclusivity in the US market.

This is a major win for the two domestic drug makers. Trileptal, chemically known as oxcarbazepine, recorded sales of around $643 million in the US alone in the year to June 2007, according to IMS Health.

“This is a big victory for the company as this is the first time that Glenmark Pharma is awarded a 180-day exclusivity period in the US,” said managing director and chief operating officer Glenn Saldanha. Glenmark Pharma started marketing oxcarbazepine tablets in three strengths — 150 mg, 300 mg and 600 mg— yesterday itself, while Sun Pharma is yet to launch the drug.

Sun Pharma said in a statement: “The company expects to reach the market shortly with these products.” Sun Pharma and Glenmark Pharma may, however, share this exclusivity period with a third company, Roxane Laboratories, a US-based generic drug maker.
