FMRAI demands exemption of excise duty on essential drugs

Federation of Medical and Sales Representatives Association of India on Wednesday demanded exemption of essential drugs from the purview of excise duty.

KOCHI: Federation of Medical and Sales Representatives Association of India on Wednesday demanded exemption of essential drugs from the purview of excise duty.

D P Dubey, General Secretary, FMRAI, said earlier excise duty was levied on cost of production. But from 2005 this has been imposed on MRP and following which the prices of drugs were increasing.

He said the three day general council meeting of FMRAI would be held at Kochi from Thursday and it would discuss various matters including drug prices, fake drugs and unethical trading and marketing practices.

The general council meeting will be attended by around 400 delegates and leaders representing around one lakh sales promotion employees working in pharmaceuticals and 39 other industries, he said.
