ET Family Business Awards: Torrent Pharma drives growth through acquisitions and innovation

Aman Mehta, a third-generation business scion, is leading Ahmedabad-based Torrent Pharmaceuticals through a defining phase of scale, ambition and strategic reinvention. As managing director, he represents a new generation of leaders focused on accelerating the company's transition into a top-tier pharmaceutical player. Central to this shift is his bold bet on inorganic growth. Mehta spearheaded Torrent Pharma's most recent acquisition of JB Chemicals, positioning the combined entity for a potential entry into Indian pharma's 'Big Five' club.

Under his leadership, Torrent Pharma ensured organic and inorganic growth, and strategic in-licensing that fuelled significant market share expansion. His leadership has brought close alignment of R&D with business strategy, with a focus on differentiated product development and faster execution of critical projects - the latest example of success being oral semaglutide.


"In today's modern and disruptive world, the only way to survive and thrive is to keep up with latest trends and trying to stay ahead," said Mehta. "You will not stay ahead all of the time, as competition is intense, but it's the few right calls that make the difference. Our goal as the nextgen is to maximise percentage of right calls versus wrong."

On the strengths of family-owned enterprises, Mehta said they tend to be more long-term focused.
