Aurobindo to market diabetes drug in S Africa
After USA, Aurobindo Pharma is all set to market its diabetes drug Metformin tablets in South Africa, as it has received marketing authorisation approval from the local Medicines Control Council (MCC).
MUMBAI: After USA, Aurobindo Pharma is all set to market its diabetes drug Metformin tablets in South Africa, as it has received marketing authorisation approval from the local Medicines Control Council (MCC).
The company has received another marketing authorization approval for Metformin tablets from Medicines Control Council (MCC) of South Africa, Aurobindo Pharma informed the Bombay Stock Exchange.
The council has approved Metformin tablets of multiple strengths like 500mg, 850mg and 1gm strengths and it is the eighth it added. Aurobindo is already marketing Metformin successfully in the US.
Metformin was originally made by US-based Bristol Myers Squibb and is popularly known as Glucophage and is mostly used in Type II diabetes especially in obese and insulin resistance cases.
Metformin helps to increase insulin sensitivity and decreases absorption of glucose from Gastro Intestinal tract. The drug at present commands a market of 15 million dollar in South Africa.
