Assam to make sale of generic drugs in pharmacy mandatory

GUWAHATI: Assam will make it mandatory for pharmacies to sale generic medicine. Tarun Gogoi Assam chief minister said that state government will make it mandatory for the government doctors to prescribe generic medicine.

The state government has decided to make sale of generic medicine one of the criteria for giving licenses to pharmacies. Gogoi said, "In giving license it will be stipulated that the pharmacy has to keep generic medicine. We cannot stop pharmacies from selling medicines of different brand however they have to keep generic medicine."

The state government will purchase generic medicines for the government hospitals.
