'Abuse of synthetic and pharmaceutical drugs is increasing'
The abuse of synthetic and pharmaceutical drugs is on a rise and concrete steps should be taken to address the issue, the Narcotics Control Bureau chief said.
Inaugurating a seminar - Illicit Drug Abuse - Prevention and Control - NCB Director General K C Verma said drugs were undergoing changes and addicts were moving to synthetic and pharmaceutical drugs.
"The abuse of synthetic and pharmaceutical drugs are on the rise and it poses a greater challenge to all of us. We need to address the challenges posed by the arrival of synthetic and pharmaceutical drugs," Verma said.
India is sandwiched between two opium producing regions and it poses a challenge to the country, he said adding that the preliminary estimates showed that Afghanistan, the largest opium producer, has a larger crop than previous years. "This poses a challenge to us," he added.
Addressing the seminar, Delhi government's Social Welfare Department Secretary Gyanendra Srivastav advocated the need for strict enforcement of legislations meant to prevent drug abuse.
"Along with this, we need to sensitise and educate the public about the problems posed by drug abuse," he added.
