P K Bansal pitches for strong GLP base in the country
Government on Monday pitched for a strong Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) base in the country by increasing the number of such test facilities.
"It is now imperative to build a strong GLP base in India by increasing the number of GLP certified test facitilites," Science and Technology Minister P K Bansal said inaugurating a meeting on GLP organised by CII.
The Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Council had granted full adherent status on GLP to India in March this year.
The full adherent status on GLP means that any test data generated by GLP certified facilities would be acceptable in OECD countries, thereby putting an end to evaluation of Indian labs by foreign inspectors, officials said.
India presently has 18 GLP certified facilities out of which six are pharma/agrochemical companies, 11 contract research organisations and one government lab.
"This year we have seen an enhanced interests by institutions in getting GLP certificate from the National GLP Compliance Monitoring Authority and 10 new applications have been received from different parts of the country," Bansal said.
He underlined the need to enthuse and empower select government institutions to come up to the standards of OECD GLP in order to encourage Indian trade in the sectors of chemicals, paints, biotech and food and allied areas.
"The government plans to bring a suitable legislation on GLP, once a consensus amongst the various ministries involved is worked out," the minister said.
