BANGALORE: Stem cell banking and research company Life Cell will soon be opening its stem cell transplant centre — the first of its kind in India — set up in collaboration with Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC), Chennai. The soft launch will be held in two weeks’ time and the formal launch in January 2007, said Prasad Mangipudi, vice-president marketing, Life Cell. The centre would specialise in treating blood disorders.

“Life Cell has invested close to Rs 10 crore in the project. SRMC provided us with the space and back-end support,” Mr Mangipudi said. Life Cell would be setting up similar transplant centres in Mumbai and Delhi as well next year. By 2008, the company would have five such centres with each centre handling different specialities, he said. In other cities, Life Cell would follow a similar model as the centre at SRMC and is currently looking for partners. “We do see a potential for medical tourism,” Mr Mangipudi said.

Life Cell started with cord blood banking in 2004 and has 22 collection centres across the country and close to 5,000 enrollments.
