The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by NDB president Dilma Rousseff and Narayana Health founder and chairman Dr Devi Shetty in Jaipur on the sidelines of the first BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting. Anuradha Thakur, secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, and alternate governor for India at NDB, was also present.
The partnership will focus on digital health, data systems, technology transfer and knowledge sharing, with the aim of helping emerging economies build more efficient healthcare delivery systems.
“This MoU is an institutional partnership between NDB and Narayana Health to ensure that excellence, innovation, efficiency and affordability can, and must, coexist in healthcare,” Rousseff said. She described the agreement as a milestone for NDB’s efforts to promote social inclusion.
Dr Shetty said Narayana Health would work with NDB and its member countries to support stronger, technology-enabled healthcare systems across emerging economies.
The agreement comes months after Rousseff visited Narayana Health City in Bengaluru in March, where she observed the hospital group’s model of combining affordable healthcare with technology and patient-focused care.
The partnership also comes as NDB expands its role as a development-finance institution serving emerging economies. Established in 2015 by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the bank finances infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets and developing countries. It expanded its membership beyond the founding BRICS countries in 2021, and Uzbekistan became its 10th member in June 2026.
NDB’s mandate is to mobilise resources for infrastructure and sustainable development while complementing existing multilateral and regional financial institutions. Its current members are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Bangladesh, Egypt, the UAE, Algeria and Uzbekistan.
For Narayana Health, the agreement provides an opportunity to take its hospital-management and technology practices beyond India and into other emerging markets. Founded by Dr Shetty in 2000, the group operates a network of hospitals and healthcare facilities in India and has an overseas presence in the Cayman Islands and the UK.
