Government asks Cipla to pay Rs 49.47 cr for overcharging

Drug manufacturer Cipla said on Thursday it has received a notice from the government to pay Rs 49.47 crore for "alleged" overcharging on its drug Salbutamol, and said the same is "legally untenable".

MUMBAI: Drug manufacturer Cipla said on Thursday it has received a notice from the government to pay Rs 49.47 crore for "alleged" overcharging on its drug Salbutamol, and said the same is "legally untenable".

"These notices are contrary to the orders of the Supreme Court and the company has received legal advice that entire amounts demanded by the government are not tenable and sustainable," the company said in a communique to Bombay Stock Exchange.

The company had earlier received notices from National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, seeking an aggregate of Rs 941.92 crore along with the interests for overcharging on five drugs till March 2006.
