Breeding standardisation mooted for fishes

An international seminar on ornamental fish trade has called for enforcement of strict bio-security measures in the industry and standardisation of breeding technologies.

KOCHI: An international seminar on ornamental fish trade has called for enforcement of strict bio-security measures in the industry and standardisation of breeding technologies.

The seminar on 'Ornamental Fish Breeding, Farming and Trade', which concluded here, also suggested that corrective measures should be taken to offset the impact of climate change on ornamental fishes, and collection by eco-hostile methods has to be prevented by strict legislation and introduction of a certification system.

The seminar, attended by delegates from abroad including US, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Singapore also recommended preparation of a list of wild caught ornamental fishes.

It also mooted formation of national bodies to bring together all stakeholders in the industry and emphasised the need for standardisation of breeding technologies and adoption of good quality control practices.

Kerala Fisheries Minister S Sarma said the state government would take the recommendations seriously and would try to implement them.

With the objective to increase production and export of ornamental fishes, the state government had registered a company 'Aqua Technology Park' at nearby Aluva.
