Mumbai: Enzene Biosciences, the fast-emerging biotech subsidiary of Alkem Labs, which is among the top five pharmaceutical companies in India, has launched a new manufacturing facility in the US with an investment of $70 million.

Based in New Jersey, Enzene's announcement follows President Donald Trump's frenetic calls to pharma companies to boost local manufacturing and generating employment. At present, Enzene has hired 50 people and aims to take a total of 200 on board over time.

"We nurtured and developed the technology of connected continuous manufacturing. Our EnzeneX (technology name) is now finding its home in the United States, the land of innovation," Himanshu Gadgil, CEO, Enzene Biosciences, told ET. "This reflects not only Enzene's growth, but also the strength of India's scientific ecosystem and our collective ability to contribute transformative solutions to the world," he added.

Connected continuous manufacturing technology developed indigenously by Enzene offers significant cost-efficiencies and faster process as compared to the traditional batch-wise biotech drug manufacturing.
