WBSEDC & WBSETC to supply quality power to consumers

West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company (WBSEDC) and West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company (WBSETC) will implement T&D projects and supply quality power to consumers.

KOLKATA: Amid irregular supplies of electrical equipment for transmission and distribution (T&D) projects, the newly formed West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company (WBSEDC) and West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company (WBSETC) are redesigning their purchase policy. In doing so, both entities will be able to implement T&D projects within a timeframe and supply quality power to consumers.

Addressing a seminar on Wednesday organised by Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA), MK De, chairman and managing director of WBSEDC said: “We want to become number one player in the country in providing quality power to the consumers. We have lined up nearly Rs 1,000 crore investments in T&D sector. We want steady supply of equipment for implementing projects. If the existing players fail to supply on time, we may start importing equipment for our projects.”

WBSEDC has firmed up plans to invest Rs 500 crore for beefing up the distribution sector in the state. Out of this Rs 500 crore, nearly Rs 135 crore will come from the central government under the Accelerated Power Development Reforms Programme (APDRP). It is planning to install high-voltage distribution systems of 10 KV, 15 KV and 25 KV. “We will also have plans to introduce insulated conductors,” MK De said.

Incidentally, the state government has launched a residual life assessment study of the state’s transmission and distribution system.

The state power minister, Mrinal Banerjee, too pointed out that inadequate supply of equipment is a major stumbling block to implement projects in time. “Public sector BHEL is the only supplier of equipment for generating stations. The PSU is always overbooked and therefore it cannot provide equipment in time. We have now taken a decision to float global tenders for all our upcoming generating stations,” he said.

Replying to queries on the state’s power situation, Mrinal Banerjee informed that the demand has increased by 500 mw in the peak period. “We are aware that the consumers are facing power cuts in the evening peak period. The situation will improve once 2,000 MW of power is added to the system by July from our new projects,” he said.
