Thermal power station coming up in Assam, Meghalaya
Assam would get a new 480 MW thermal power station and neighbouring Meghalaya two projects of total 1170 MW to take care of their acute power crisis, Union Power Secretary R V Shahi said on Saturday.
GUWAHATI: Assam would get a new 480 MW thermal power station and neighbouring Meghalaya two projects of total 1170 MW to take care of their acute power crisis, Union Power Secretary R V Shahi said on Saturday.
The three projects would be executed by the North East Power Corporation (NEEPCO) based in Meghalaya, Shahi told reporters here.
In Meghalaya, a 450 MW project would be established at Kaysi and another of 720 MW in the Garo Hills while in Assam the new power station would be established in Margherita, he said.
As the calorific (heat) value of coal found in the two states was very high, the power secretary said, "why not use this. But its high sulphur content only has to be treated to avoid pollution".
Shahi said the North Eastern states should take steps to to improve the power generation capacity.
With a combined electricity shortage of over 1100 MW, the Region must take initiatives to meet the shortage of demand by increasing its capacity addition, he said.
Noting there was no capacity addition in the last 20 years in Assam and Meghalaya, Shahi said, even some existing unit had been closed down. He was referring to the Bongaigaon Thermal Power Station and the Chandrapur station in Asssam which had a combined capacity of 500 MW.
"If capacity addition has to be made, then the state governments would have to come forward to meet shortage problem and take fast decisions to improve the situation in the future", the union secretary asserted.
