Teesta Urja to start work on 1,200MW project
Hydro power company Teesta Urja Ltd on Friday said it would shortly start construction on the 1,200 MW Teesta-III hydroelectric plant, the biggest hydel project to come up in north Sikkim.
GANGTOK: Hydro power company Teesta Urja Ltd on Friday said it would shortly start construction on the 1,200 MW Teesta-III hydroelectric plant, the biggest hydel project to come up in north Sikkim.
The Rs 6,000 crore project has recieved techno-economic and environment clearances and is likely to get forest clearance within a month. Work on the project is expected to start by January next year, Teesta Urja Chairman and Managing Director Y N Apparao told reporters.
Global tenders have already been floated for project related works, he said.
The mega project would make the state self-sufficient in electricity generation and also enable it to sell surplus power to other states, he said.
Teesta Urja is a Special Purpose Vehicle set up by Hyderabad-based Athena Consortium.
Apparao also sought to allay fears of local NGOs that the project would displace a large number of people and harm the environment.
"It is a run-off-the-river scheme, which causes no submergence of land, so there is no question of any displacement in the project area," Apparao said.
He, however, added that the company was aware of the expectations of local people. The Teesta industrial training and development centre, which has been set up at Mangan, was a step towards fulfilling these expectations.
