Teesta Urja Ltd commences construction of hydel project

Teesta Urja Ltd commenced the construction of the mega hydel power project with a generation capacity of 1200 mw in North Sikkim.

Gangtok: Teesta Urja Ltd, a consortium of private developers, commenced the construction of the mega hydel power project with a generation capacity of 1200 mw in North Sikkim, its general manager Y N Apparao said here.

The project, with an expected cost of Rs 5,000 crore, would be commissioned in 2012, he said at Chungthang yesterday after the Sikkim chief minister laid the foundation stone of the mega power project.

As part of the agreement, Sikkim would get 12 pc free power for the first 15 years and 15 pc free power thereafter even as the ownership of the hydel project would be transferred to the Himalayan state after 35 years of the commissioning of the project, Rao said.

The Teesta Urja Limited would generously contribute for development of socio-economic and cultural infrastructure in and around the site of the power project and take care of welfare needs of the local people as per the agreement with the state government which was awarded to the company in July 2005, the general manager said.

"All formal clearances with the forest and environment authorities have been obtained and the required land acquired by the developers for the project", he said.
