TEDA to generate power from water falls

MADURAI: Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) is planning to install 5 KV Micro Water Turbines as part of a pilot project to produce hydel power from water falls, a top official has said.

One site had been located in Theni district and four locations in Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore districts were under consideration, TEDA Deputy General Manager S M Vijayakumar said.

The state had sanctioned Rs 10 lakh for project and the respective District Rural Development Agencies had been asked to locate the sites.

The projects would come up in places where there was continuous flow of water, he said addressing a meeting here recently.

The electricity generated from the micro water turbines would used to power the small hamlets located in remote hilly areas.

Technical experts would assess the sites before taking a final decision on the installation of turbines, costing Rs two lakh each, he added.
