Tata Power's Mundra thermal plant to continue operations till Sept 30 under Centre's directions

Mumbai: Tata Power Tuesday said the Centre has extended the special operating framework for its Mundra thermal power plant till September 30, allowing the power station to continue supplying electricity under government directions for three more months.

This is done to avoid any electricity shortage amid an estimated peak demand of 270 GW this summer.

This March, the plant in Kutch, Gujarat, was mandated to run at 100% capacity from April to June.


The company had suspended operations at the plant on July 2, 2025, due to heavy losses.

"The company has received a letter from Ministry of Power regarding the extension of validity of the directions issued under Section 11 of the Electricity Act, 2003 for its Mundra Thermal Plant," Tata Power said in a regulatory filing. "The validity of aforesaid directions, which was earlier applicable up to June 30, 2026, has been extended and shall now remain in force until September 30, 2026."

The Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) comprises five 800 MW units providing electricity to Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. It resumed operations on April 1 after a gap of nearly nine months.

Coastal Gujarat Power supplies about half of the power generated from the Mundra plant to Gujarat.
