Tata Power to set up 2,744 MW power plants

Tata Power plans to set up three power plants with a total capacity of 2,744 MW in Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand with an investment of around Rs 11,000 crore to meet the energy needs of Tata Steel's expansion plans.


MUMBAI: Tata Power plans to set up three power plants with a total capacity of 2,744 MW in Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand with an investment of around Rs 11,000 crore to meet the energy needs of Tata Steel's expansion plans.

"The company is in talks with Tata Steel and will enter into power purchase agreement with the latter for the sale of power from these units once Tata Steel firms up its plans," Tata Power said in its 87th annual report.

Tata Power proposes to set up a 744 MW project in Chhattisgarh while two 1,000 MW project each in Jharkhand and Orissa, it said.

In Orissa, Tata Steel plans to set up 6 mn tonne plant with an investment of Rs 15,400 crore, while in Chhattisgarh it will set up five million tonne by investing Rs 12,000 crore and in Jharkhand it will set up 12 million tonne by investing Rs 40,000 crore.

Tata Power is already setting up a 120 MW captive plant for Tata Steel in Jamshedpur, utlising the waste gases released during the steel making process.

The project is likely to earn an investment of around Rs 490 crore, the report added. Tata Power has applied for allocation of 12 captive coal blocks in the Jharkhand, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.

"Upon allotment, the company plans to establish mega pit head-based power plants, generating cheaper electricity for transmission to the state markets of of its choice," the annual report said.

Aimed at meeting the power deficit in Mumbai license area, Tata Power has already announced setting up of 100 MW diesel generating sets, which are expected to be commissioned within a short span of 10-12 months.

"The project is subject to receiving necessary regulatory and environmental approvals," the report said.

The company is also pursuing an opportunity to bid for transmission lines to be owned and operated on a long-term basis.

The company is also exploring possibility of setting up a generation facility near Delhi. While bulk of the power from the project would be sold to the consumers in Delhi, part of it could be sold to consumers in neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, Tata Power said.

Delhi, presently faces an acute power shortage of around 400-600 MW a day and is forced to witness five-six hours of powerless operations.

The capital city has a generation capacity of around 1,300 MW against its demand of around 3,000 MW and gets most of the remaining electricity from outside.

North Delhi Power Ltd is the Tata Power subsidiary, which along with BSES is private electricity distributor in the city.
