Energy mix refers to combined energy sources, including fossil fuel, nuclear and renewables.
Speaking at the Bharat Electricity 2026, POWERGEN India & Indian Utility Week 2026, Prasad said that last year, India added a record 64,000 MW of new capacity, with more than 50,000 MW coming from renewables alone.

This year, India is likely to surpass even that, targeting up to 70,000 MW of fresh additions, he noted.
By 2035, India is poised to double its 2030 renewables target, reach 100 GW of pumped hydro storage by 2035-36, and achieve 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047.
He stated that India's roadmap is ambitious but necessary to ensure reliable, affordable, and clean electricity for all.
"Electricity currently accounts for just 22 per cent of India's total energy consumption. To reach net-zero and support the nation's economic transformation, the power sector is tasked with expanding this share to 45-50 per cent by 2047, taking on the growing loads of industry, mobility, and digital infrastructure," Prasad said.

He further emphasised the importance of systemic innovation, saying, " We have Rs 4 lakh crore (USD 40 billion) in transmission projects underway to evacuate 266 GW, and are planning 600 GVA of transformation capacity."
Our goal is to provide grid connectivity for new renewables within 24-36 months, even as we integrate new types of demand from data centres, hydrogen, and electric vehicles, he added.
He called on the industry to ensure supply chain resilience, urging, "With such phenomenal growth, it is essential to avoid supply chain disruptions, whether for transformers, reactors, or advanced grid equipment. We must also champion innovation, from mobile substations and SF6-free solutions to advanced forecasting and AI for grid stability."
Speaking at the event, D Sai Baba, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, said: "India has already crossed 300 GW of non-fossil installed capacity, and we now have Rs 4 lakh crore of transmission projects underway to evacuate 266 GW of clean energy. Our challenge is to convert this renewable capacity into reliable, affordable power at the right place and time, building a grid that is resilient, flexible, and ready for the future."
The exhibition showcases breakthroughs in grid modernisation, artificial intelligence, digital utilities, green hydrogen, battery storage, cybersecurity, and workforce transformation, with over 25 expert-led knowledge sessions and live demonstrations.
P K Pujari, Chairperson of ENCIS (Energy & Climate Initiatives Society), said that India's electricity sector is moving beyond simply adding capacity; our next leap is reimagining the grid itself, from fossil-heavy and centralised to renewable-rich, decentralised, and digitally enabled.
The focus now is on building flexibility, integrating smart technologies, and creating a grid that empowers consumers and delivers clean, affordable energy for all, he added.
