Reliance Infra told to halt bill collection

The state government has told Reliance Infrastructure not to recover bills from any of the 27 lakh power consumers in suburban Mumbai for the next 15 days.

MUMBAI: The state government has told Reliance Infrastructure not to recover bills from any of the 27 lakh power consumers in suburban Mumbai for the next 15 days.

During this period, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) will ascertain whether Reliance Infra has overcharged consumers and whether its revenue structure is consumer-oriented.

This is a reprieve for the companys customers, but consumer activists say the timing of the order smacks of politics.

The governments action came a day after violent protests by the Shiv Sena against what it said were shocking power bills, and against the backdrop of a tug-of-war between the Sena and the MNS for Marathi votes.
