Rel Energy arm wins Rs 1,200-cr Rel Power deal
The EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) division of Reliance Energy has bagged two contracts worth Rs 1,200 crore for transmission projects of another group company Reliance Power Transmission (RPTL)
RPTL has bagged the Western Region System Strengthening Scheme (WRSS-B and C) project, which is the countrys first wholly-owned private transmission project in the western region, awarded on the basis of competitive tariff bidding. The project involves laying 1,519 km of double circuit 400 kV D/C transmission lines. REL has agreed to complete the project, delayed by one-and-half-years, in 18 months.
The transmission business unit wanted a single vendor for end-to-end supplies for the entire transmission project. Only REL offered this from among a group of three to four other vendors. The company has also agreed to complete the project by the end of December 2009, sources said. With the finalisation of the EPC contractor, work on the over Rs 2,000-crore transmission projects is expected to begin immediately.
The WRSS project B covers about 1,000 km of 400 kV double circuit transmission lines in Maharashtra whereas Project C covers about 500 km in Gujarat. Two separate transmission licence to this effect had been applied from Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) by two independent private transmission companies of RPTL.

The nine lines comprising around 4,300 towers made of around 60,000 tonnes of steel, 18,000 kms of conductor and around one million insulators will be commissioned by the end of 2009.
RELs EPC division undertakes engineering, design, construction and execution of industrial projects in various fields like generation, transmission and distribution, mainly focusing on the power sector to achieve and set new benchmarks in the power sector. The current project is, however, its first in the transmission area.
