Quality power need of hour
Especially with the advent of IT in the country, in a measure not even dreamt probably by any one, not only has the demand for power has gone up, but the demand for quality power is at an all time high.
According to BRV Murthy, principal consultant, Potential Service Consultants, the demand for power has gone up exponentially in such a short period of time that even the authorities are not able to cope with the demand in spite of the many schemes being implemented to generate power.
Quality naturally suffers when demand overtakes supply and the results are here for all of us to see and experience. “Today’s power situation is such that it has become a norm to have a 100% backup source to the utility power. The backup source could be either generators or UPS. Even non-critical applications such as residential power needs are backed by generators in cities due to the lack of quality power.
This being the case in the metros, one can imagine the fate of those living in suburbs and smaller towns. They should be lucky if they have power supply even for a few hours in a day let alone quality power,” said Mr Murthy.
According to him, if only our country could meet the ever-growing power needs with assured quality as said above, we could curb the usage of generator sets, thereby contributing to a cleaner and greener environment. “A clean power source can help reduce climate changes and global warming, minimise and eliminate pollutants released into the environment from fossil fuels, lessen our dependence on foreign sources of fossil fuels, help conserve our resources, diversify the fuel supply and pave the way for more stable energy prices,” he added.
By definition, sustained continuous power can be termed as clean power. In other words, power supply which can be delivered at +/- 1% voltage variation, with +/- 0.05HZ frequency variation, supply that has no sudden surges or spikes, no sags or swells, is referred to as clean power. Applications of clean power are many. In fact, clean power has become a must for any process equipment be in IT, controls, sophisticated medical equipment, security systems or wherever the process cannot tolerate a break in power supply.

Today‘s servers, lifesaving medical equipment and many other sophisticated equipment need continuous power supply. In other words, ‘no break’ power with extremely low variations in voltage and frequency for their performance can only be made possible by using UPS which by definition is uninterruptible supply which supplies almost constant voltage, constant frequency power.
