NEW DELHI: Even as the government has pro-actively tried to attract private developers to set up the 4,000-MW ultra mega power projects, when it comes to setting up the transmission system, the ministry of power has opted to entrust the task to PowerGrid.
The state-owned transmission major will be setting up the power evacuation system for the Sasan and Mundra ultra mega power projects. The transmission system for these two projects will cost Rs 10,000 crore.
Around 22 lines at a cost of Rs 8,000 crore will be set up in the western region, while nine lines at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore will be set up in the northern region. The transmission charges for the Sasan and Mundra system will be borne by the northern and western region.
The charges will be split as a ratio of their allocation from the Sasan and Mundra plants and pooled into the regional transmission charges. Himachal Pradesh, which will not draw from these projects, has asked that the recovery mechanism for transmission charges should be such that states which do not draw power from the project are insulated from the charges.
Uttaranchal, which will draw 400 MW from the two projects, has said that the total northern region component should not be pooled in the northern region transmission charges. New Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have emerged as the major buyers of power from the 4,000-MW projects at Sasan (Madhya Pradesh) and Mundra (Gujarat).
Uttaranchal, Haryana, Rajasthan are among the other states that will buy power from this project. In the case of the Mundra project, the host state Gujarat will buy 1,600 MW, followed by Maharashtra, which has committed to buying 800 MW, Punjab will buy 500 MW, while Uttar Pradesh will buy 300 MW.
