Power supply shortfall during August touched 11% vis-a-vis demand

Against a demand of 128,119 mn units, power generators could supply 114,101 mn units causing supply shortfall of 4,098 mn units in August.

KOLKATA: Power supply shortfall during August touched 11% vis-a-vis demand according to date compiled by the Central Electricity Authority. This was one of the highest shortfall during the year.

Against a demand of 128,119 million units of power, the power generators managed only to supply about 114,101 million units leading to a supply shortfall of 4,098 million units during August.

The highest shortfall was in the southern region which witnessed demand touch 35,562 million units while supply was a 29,008 million units during August. The shortfall was to the extent of 6,554 million units - a 18.4%. The region suffers from poor grid connectivity to the rest of the country leading to a volume of power being transported to Southern India from rest of the country that results in large demand-supply shortfall.

The second largest shortfall was in the Northern States which has started drawing less power following the grid failure in July. The region witnessed a demand of 41,520 million units against a supply of 36,458 million units leading to a shortfall of 5,062 million units - a 12.2 % gap.

Power supply shortfall in West, East and North East were relatively less at 4%, 6.2% and 8.7% respectively.
