Power generation interrupted at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant

CHENNAI: The power generation from unit 1 of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant ( KNPP) was stopped today in the wake of some technical snag, a top official said.

The power production was expected to resume in about two or three days after fixing the problem, KNPP Site Director R S Sundar told PTI over phone.

"The power generation from KNPP's first unit stopped at 12.41 pm today as the reactor stopped functioning while we were carrying out some checks," he said.

The unit was generating around 400 MWe of power before the reactor stopped functioning, he said, replying to a query.

KNPP's unit 1 has been considerably contributing to the power-starved Tamil Nadu, since the last week of October.

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd ( NPCIL) is collaborating with Russia to set up two 1,000 MWe reactors at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district, around 650 km from here.

While the first unit attained criticality July 2013, the second unit is nearing completion.
