Old, inefficient power plants to be advised to close down

NEW DELHI: Concerned about environment and clean air, the Central government will advise closure of old and polluting thermal power plants, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday in her Budget Speech.

Utilities running thermal power plants, which are old and have higher carbon emissions, would be advised to close them, she said.

"The land so vacated, can be put to alternative uses," she said.
