NTPC signed a supplementary joint venture agreement with Nuclear Power Corporation of India on Monday to develop nuclear electricity generation projects.

The joint venture will initially develop two pressurized heavy-water reactor projects - 1,400 MW Chutka in Madhya Pradesh and 2,800 MW Mahi Banswara in Rajasthan.

State-owned NTPC had earlier said it planned to foray into nuclear power and get into fuel tie-up pacts with Uranium Corporation of India to ensure requisite availability.

The largest power generator in India aspires to become a 130-GW company by 2032 of which 2,000 MW will be from nuclear sources. However, the entire capacity of the two projects may come online by 2035, the company had earlier said.

"We are confident that out of the Chutka and Mahi Banswara, we will be definitely completing 2,000 MW," it had said.

The government is giving a push to nuclear power projects to meet its clean energy targets and diversify its electricity generation sources.
