Non-fossil power capacity set to cross 300 GW by Sept, says energy minister Pralhad Joshi

New Delhi: Renewable energy minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said India's non-fossil fuel-based power capacity is set to cross 300 GW by September. The current capacity of non-fossil fuel-based projects is 291.5 GW, while the target is to reach 500 GW by 2030.

A key element of making green hydrogen in India is the use of green energy with estimates that for 5 million tonnes production capacity under the National Green Hydrogen Mission around 125 GW of dedicated renewable energy capacity is needed. Speaking at the national workshop on green hydrogen, Joshi said the sector was poised to grow further in the domestic market in the wake of the West Asia crisis. The National Green Hydrogen Mission launched in 2023 has an outlay of ₹19,744 crore. So far, incentives under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition scheme have been awarded for 862,000 tonnes/year green hydrogen production capacity. Joshi called on states without green hydrogen policies to enter "competitive mode", saying faster policy support will be critical to attracting investments under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. He said six states have already notified dedicated green hydrogen policies, while seven others have integrated hydrogen into their existing industrial and renewable energy policy frameworks.


He added that four more States are in the process of finalising their policies.
