A major landslide on Tuesday damaged state-owned power producer NHPC Ltd's 510 MW Teesta-V power station at Balutar in Sikkim. The power station is currently not operational and is undergoing restoration works after flash flood in October last year.

The incident affected Tail Race Tunnel gate hoist structure and part of the GIS Building, the company said in an exchange filing.

The power house, where generation takes place, is underground and not above where the damages happened, an official who did not wish to be named said.

"The area of Teesta Basin Region has been subject to periodic natural subsidence/ landslides during the ongoing monsoon season. Today's incident also occurred due to subsidence/landslide over Tail Race Tunnel outlet structure and behind GIS Building," it added.

NHPC's expert team is visiting the power station to assess the situation.
