N-power to produce 20,000 MW by 2020

BOKARO: The Centre today said once the Indo-US nuclear deal comes into effect, 20,000 mw of power could be produced by 2020.

"Nuclear energy is the need of the hour," Union Minister of state for power Jairam Ramesh told reporters after visiting Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) here.

Stating that a branch office would soon be opened in Ranchi by the DVC, the union minister said that the public sector had decided to set up two units at its Chandrapura power plant that would produce 500 mw by 2009.

The project would cost Rs 2000 crore, he added. The DVC in association with TATA and SAIL would also set up power plants at Bokaro and Koderma which would produce 3,700 mw within the next four years.

The government would spend Rs 310 crore to on existing units at Chandrapura in Bokaro that would enhance power production, he added.

Ramesh said steps were being taken to improve the existing power plants situated in south India.
