Minister favours BHEL unit in West Bengal

BHEL should set up a manufacturing unit in West Bengal, Heavy Industries Minister Santosh Mohan Dev said on Friday.

KOLKATA: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, the country's biggest power equipment supplier, should set up a manufacturing unit in West Bengal, Heavy Industries Minister Santosh Mohan Dev said on Friday.

"I am interested in West Bengal having a BHEL unit," he told reporters.

The matter would be referred to an expert committee for further examination, he added.

Dev said the north-eastern region of the country had great potential in hydel power generation. But since the region, including Assam, did not have proper infrastructure, West Bengal had become a preferred destination.

Dev said during the end of the month, he would visit all the units under his ministry to take stock of the situation.

The government has approved a revival package for four power units in West Bengal -- Andrew Yule, Bridge & Roof, BBJ Construction and Braithwaite.
