Manipur faces 90 MW power shortage, MSPDCL says rotational power cuts continue

Guwahati: Manipur is facing a power shortage of around 90 MW, with the state receiving only about 180 MW against its peak requirement of 270 MW, prompting the Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL) to continue rotational power cuts across the state.

In a press note issued on Wednesday, MSPDCL Managing Director M. Rabi Singh said the shortage is linked to the prevailing power crisis being experienced across India. Despite the availability of funds, the state is facing difficulties in ensuring adequate power supply.

MSPDCL attributed the current shortage to reduced hydropower generation due to inadequate rainfall, a decline in thermal power generation caused by disruptions in coal storage and supply, and a shortage of power available in the energy market.

The power distribution company said the Government of Manipur and MSPDCL are coordinating efforts and exploring alternative means to reduce the shortage and restore normal power supply.

“Rotational” power cuts are being imposed for the time being due to the prevailing shortage, the MSPDCL said, appealing to consumers to cooperate during the period of power constraints.
