NEW DELHI: Faced with almost 5000 MW of peak power shortfall, Maharashtra will get additional natural gas for its power generation units to tide over the crisis which is effecting even so-far-untouched Mumbai.
According to official sources, Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, at a special meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on May 11, agreed to divert some of the gas meant for Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) to Maharasthra State Electricity Board (MSEB) for raising power generation.
GAIL supplies 4.8 million standard cubic meters per day of gas to RCF. Of this, 0.25 mmscmd is being presently given to MSEB. This gas is proposed to be doubled to meet the demand in summer and normal supplies to RCF will resume after monsoon, the sources said.
By June-end, regassified Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will begin flowing to Dabhol's two units of 750 MW each. Gas supply for the third unit of 750 MW would be available once the unit is ready by December 2007, sources said.
The state is also due to get 1,500 MW of power from the Dabhol power plant, which is expecting LNG inflow once work on the 12 km stretch of Dahej-Panvel-Dabhol pipeline in Gujarat gets completed.
With the Gujarat government agreeing to support the unfinished section of the pipeline, the line is expected to be ready by June 20.
Work on the 12-km length was stalled as the state government opposed the project on the grounds that the gas pricing formula worked out for Dabhol would result in rise in price of gas for industries in the state.
