Bengaluru, State-owned KPCL, a leading power producer, has set a record by generating 15,509 million units of hydropower during the financial year 2025-26, officials said on Friday.

This achievement gains added significance as Karnataka has recently been ranked among the leading states in hydropower, with an installed capacity of 3.63 gigawatts, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the Energy Department said in a statement.

According to the Energy Department, a total of 15,509 million units of electricity was generated from four stations in the Sharavathi Valley, four in the Kali Valley, two each in the Varahi and Cauvery Valleys, and one each in the Krishna and Tungabhadra river systems.

In comparison, the previous record was 13,853 million units in 2024-25, it said.

"KPCL has made consistent efforts to meet the state's power demand. Even some of the oldest hydropower stations-such as Shivanasamudra, Shimsha, Sharavathi, and the Mahatma Gandhi Hydel Power Station at Jog Falls-have delivered impressive performance. Improved maintenance practices have played a key role in boosting generation," said Karnataka Power Corporation Limited Managing Director and Additional Chief Secretary (Energy), Gaurav Gupta.

The Sharavathi and Varahi Valley power stations together generated 8,696 million units, setting another record in 2025-26, it said.
