Kerala to boost power generation

With the supply-demand gap of electricity growing in Kerala, the state power board has drawn up plans to augment power production by 1,200 MW in the coming years.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the supply-demand gap of electricity growing in Kerala, the state power board has drawn up plans to augment power production by 1,200 MW in the coming years, Electricity's Minister A K Balan said on Monday.

The schemes on the anvil included hydel projects with a total installed capacity of 470.90 MW expected to be completed in the next four years, Balan said in reply the state Assembly.

Electrics would be produced by tapping non-conventional sources like wind energy and taking up renovation, modernisation and uprating of existing projects that have been into operation for over 30 years.

The Centre had recently allotted a coal field at Baitharani in Orissa to be jointly tapped by Kerala, Orissa and Gujarat for their thermal power plants, he said.

Using the state's share, an ambitious project for setting up a 1000-MW thermal plant was also under consideration.
Besides, the Centre had been urged to augment the capacity of NTPC's Kayamkulam plant from 360 MW to 2300 MW using LNG as the fuel.
