Kerala gets extension on power board recasting
Kerala on Thursday received another six months' extension on restructuring the state electricity board into three separate companies, for which December nine was set as the deadline.
The companies will handle separately generation, transmission and distribution.
Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde accepted the request in this regard after the state cabinet's decision to seek extension was communicated to him, Kerala Electricity Minister A K Balan told reporters here.
Balan said the state would complete the formalities for restructuring the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) within the extension given to it.
However, there would be no privatisation of the board as the government's decision was to retain all the three companies in the public sector under a single umbrella.
The report of the experts' committee set up for the purpose would be placed before the cabinet, which would decide whether the recasting should be done through an executive order or by bringing in a legislation in the assembly, he said.
Under the Electricity Act 2003, all the states should have created three separate entities within a year. But the erstwhile UDF government and the present LDF government had deferred the completion of the formalities and obtained extensions from the Centre since then.
