SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Power Development (PDD) Department has constituted a surveillance team comprising officers of all the wings of the department to carry out random checks against power theft in both domestic and business establishments.
The team would penalise consumers who resort to power theft and would trap officials of PDD with whose connivance such pilferage takes place, an official spokesman said.
Power Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora issued directions to power commissioner and chief ministers of all wings in Srinagar and Jammu asking them to intensify process of electronic metering to curb the power pilferage.
He emphasised that metering alone was the immediate solution for the power problem of the state. The metering has helped to lower down the power pilferage in the areas where total metering has been done.
Jora said it also prevents damage to transformers thereby saving the money being spent on repairing of damaged transformers and purchase of new transformers.
Meanwhile, the minister appealed to people for judicious use of power saying that generation capacity has reduced subsequently due to poor monsoon.
