Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys commissions second power unit

KOLKATA: Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys (IMFA), India’s leading fully integrated producer of value-added ferro chrome, has commissioned the second unit of its 2x60 MW Captive Power Plant (CPP) located at Choudwar, Odisha. While the first unit of the CPP was commissioned in January of this year, following synchronisation of the second unit with the grid the company’s captive power generation capacity now stands at 258 MW.

Set up at a cost of around Rs 600 crore, the 120 MW power plant will primarily cater to IMFA’s captive requirement of electricity for its ferro chrome production. However, in the short term, there will be some surplus which will be sold to the grid / third parties with the power injection at Choudwar helping system parameters in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar & Cuttack.

The state-of-the-art CFBC boilers are highly efficient and capable of using a wide range of coal including washery rejects which will help bring down the cost of generation.

Commenting on the development, Subhrakant Panda, managing director said: “The commissioning of the second unit of the 120 MW power plant is an important milestone as our captive generation capacity has nearly doubled and we now have the headroom to expand our ferro alloys smelting capacity which is under active consideration.
