Gujarat to achieve self-reliance in energy by 2010: Modi
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the state will attain self-reliance in the energy sector by 2010.
"When Gujarat celebrates its golden jubilee in 2010, we will become self-reliant in the energy sector," he said after laying the foundation stone of a 350 MW gas-based power project here in Surat district.
"Gujarat will ride the chariot of energy which will be pulled by seven horses," the BJP leader said, using a mythological metaphor to symbolise the seven sources of energy - thermal, nuclear, gas, solar, coal, wind and lignite.
"This 350 MW (expansion) project powered by gas is one step towards this direction," the Modi said, adding the project will be completed within a couple of years.
Once the project, being set up by Gujarat State Energy Generation Ltd (GSEG), is completed the total installed capacity of the company will go up from 156 MW to 506 MW.
The project is part of GSEG's 1,000 MW expansion plan which will be carried out in three phases. GSEG is a company promoted by Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd (GSPC), Krishak Bharti Co-operative Ltd (Kribhco), GAIL (India) and other public sector entities.
The power generated by the expansion will be sold to Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL).
