Govt scraps bidding for Odisha UMPP; to call fresh bids in a month

NEW DELHI: The government has scrapped bidding process of the 4,000-mw ultra mega power project at Bedhabahal in Odisha.

"The request for qualification for 4000 mw Odisha UMPP issued on June 11, 2010 is hereby annulled," an official notice said.

The government is likely to call fresh preliminary bids for the project in a month's time.

The project, the fifth ultra mega power project,had attracted an overwhelming response with 20 companies including NTPC, Tata Power, Lanco Infratech and GMR Energy submitting bids to develop the plant and attached coalmines.

Companies that were eyeing the about Rs 20,000 crore ultra mega power projectincluded Larsen & Toubro, Adani Power, Jindal Power, JSW Energy, Sterlite Energy, Aditya Birla Power, Torrent Power, National Aluminium Company Ltd, GVK Energy Ventures and Jaiprakash PowerVentures.

The project'sbidding was stuck initially for want of green clearance to one of three attached coalmines. Later, the bidding was put on hold as the government initiated drafting new bidding norms for such projects.
