MUMBAI: Government has planned massive addition to the power generation capacity in the country, Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Tueday.

Besides, keeping with the goal of providing power for all by 2012, the government will give 90 per cent subsidy for providing electricity to 1.34 lakh villages in the country, he said.

Inaugurating the power transformer factory of Siemens here today, the minister said the government has decided for capacity addition of 78,000 MW. There will also be some addition taking place on account of non-conventional energy as well as power produced from lignite, he said.

Shinde estimated power shortage of 22,000 MW in the country at present.

He said orders for generating 56,000 MW of power has already been placed, while that for the remaining capacity would be placed by March 2008.

Shinde, however, indicated there were difficulties in procuring equipment required to generate power. The capacities for equipment like boiler and turbines have been booked till 2012, he said. The government is also trying to get technology for supercritical machines.
