Gogoi lays foundation stone for first private power plant

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a 10 MW bio-mass based power plant, North-East region's first power plant to be set up by the private sector.

MORIGAON: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a 10 MW bio-mass based power plant, North-East region's first power plant to be set up by the private sector.

Speaking on the occasion, Gogoi said the new power plant would further help the process of liberalisation in the power sector to achieve electrification of all villages in the country by 2009 under the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme.

The plant will be set up by West Bengal-based Amrit Bio-Energy and Industries company and will generate 10 MW of electricity which will fulfill the needs of Morigaon district.

State Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi said that in order to meet the demand of power in the state, private players have to be involved.

There has been opposition to the privatisation of power sector in the state.
