GUWAHATI: The first unit of NTPC’s Bongaigaon Thermal Power Station (BTPS) in Assam started power generation on Tuesday.

According to NTPC, the first unit of the 3x250 MW power station has been test synchronised successfully with the Northeastern Regional Grid.

Assam is expected to get 380 MW from the project, which was built with an investment of about Rs 4,375.35 crore. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh had laid foundation stone for the project in 2006.

Coal for the project is being sourced from Margherita Area of North-Eastern Coal Fields Ltd (NECL) and non-Raniganj coal sources of Eastern Coal Fields Ltd (ECL).

The project had faced delays due to violent clashes between ethnic groups in the area over the last couple of years. The first unit was expected to come up by 2014.
