Eco Survey 2016: Industries prefer captive plants, DG sets over costlier supply from discoms

Industries are moving away from purchasing electricity from distribution utilities to setting up captive plants or using diesel generators.

NEW DELHI: Industries are moving away from purchasing electricity from distribution utilities to setting up captive plants or using diesel generators, due to high supply costs.

The Economic Survey tabled in Parliament on Friday said between 2006-07 and 2014-15, electricity procurement by industries from distribution utilities grew by 4.6% annually, slower than the 9.3% in self-generation.

According to the survey, 47% of firms report using a diesel generator.
