DVC poised to become 2nd largest power producer: Ramesh

Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh on Friday said the multi-purpose agency, however, has the potential to become the country's second largest power producer after NTPC.

KOLKATA: Terming the performance of Damodar Valley Corporation as "not impressive", Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh on Friday said the multi-purpose agency, however, has the potential to become the country's second largest power producer after NTPC.

"It is not an impressive achievement," Ramesh said on the DVC's currently installed generation capacity of 2,400 MW, putting which together took 60 years.

DVC would ramp up the capacity from 2,400 MW to 11,000 MW within a span of four years, Ramesh told reporters here today, adding that this capacity addition at a cost of Rs 40,000 crore would make it the second largest power generating company in India after NTPC.

For this, DVC has already placed order with state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) for supply of equipment and the work has started.

DVC's expansion would take place at its units in West Bengal and Jharkhand.

On May 15, a 250-MW unit would be commissioned at Mejia. Two units each of 250 MW would also be commissioned at Chandrapura in August and December this year, he said.
