Demand-supply gap between power generation; demand touched 8.2% in April according to CEA
Demand supply gap between electricity generation and demand touched 8.2% in April 2012 according to the Central Electricity Authority.
According to CEA total generation shortfall during 2011-12 was 8.5% with demand touching 9,37,199 million units and generation lagging at 8,57,886 million units. The absolute shortfall was 79,313 million units during the year.
Data compiled by the CEA suggests that the highest shortfall was witnessed by Meghalaya at 28.1% with 146 million units of generation during April 2012. This state also suffered the highest shortfall at 25% during 2011-12.
The Western region witnessed the highest shortfall at 11.4% during 2011-12. South India saw the largest demand supply gap during April 2012 at 15.5%, marginally higher by 0.5% during the previous corresponding period.
Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu experienced huge demand supply gap during April 2012 among South Indian sates. Tamil Nadu, in fact, was the state that saw the highest shortfall in absolute terms at 1,767 million units.
For 2011-12, Maharashtra saw an absolute shortfall of 23,660 million units – the highest in India followed by Uttar Pradesh at 9,223 million units.
