Delhi to buy 2500 MW power from DVC

NEW DELHI: Making every possible effort to get power for the national capital to reduce shortages, Delhi Government is all set to buy nearly 2500 MW power from Damodar Valley Corporation, an MoU for which is to be signed on Thursday.
However, the relief to Delhiites can be expected only by 2007-08 under the agreement, which was facilitated by the Union Government after the national capital's efforts to have a dedicated power plant in Chhattisgarh did not materialise.
Around 500 MW could be provided to Delhi from DVC's expansion projects that are already under construction at Mejia and Chandrapura in West Bengal, Union Power Secretary R V Shahi told media.
DVC would be able to supply 1000 MW to the capital from its proposed expansion project at Mejia by adding two units of 500 MW each, work on which is to start in the next few months, he said.
Besides, Delhi will also be able to get additional 1000 MW from DVC's proposed power station at Koderma in Jharkhand.
Meanwhile, Delhi Government is also looking into the possibility of setting up a 1500 MW power plant in Haryana from which 750 MW each would be shared by the two states.
The agreement between Delhi and Chhattisgarh was called off after the Power Ministry objected to the provision in the MoU that five per cent of the power would be given to Chhattisgarh free of fixed charge, saying it went against the national policy.
