Delhi Govt signs pact for LNG

Speaking on the occasion, Petroleum Minsiter Murli Deora said the supplies from Petronet would help Delhi overcome its power shortages.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government on Friday signed an agreement with Petronet LNG Ltd for purchase of natural gas for fire generation projects with a total capacity of about 1,500 MW, as part of the steps to tide over shortages by the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
PLL Managing Director and CEO P Dasgupta and Pragati Power Corporation Ltd Managing Director P K Chakravarti signed an MoU for 1.5 million tonnes (6 million standard cubic meters per day) of gas from 2009-10.
The agreement between Petronet and Pragati Power comes about two months after the Delhi government signed agreements with the Haryana government and public sector generation companies NTPC and Damodar Valley Corporation for projects with a total capacity of about 4,500 MW.
Speaking on the occasion, Petroleum Minsiter Murli Deora said the supplies from Petronet would help Delhi overcome its power shortages.
"The current peak demand of the state is about 4,100 MW and the supplies are around 3,400 MW, leaving a deficit of 700 MW. This will significantly increase in 2010, when India hosts the Commonwealth Games," Deora said.
Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit said 330 MW capacity would be added in Phase II of the Pragati Power project and the Bawana project would have a capacity of 1,000 MW. The government was talking to NTPC Ltd for implementing the Bawana power project.
Dasgupta said a firm Gas Supply and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) would have to be signed after Petronet arranges for additional LNG imports.
