Delhi Budget 2011: Now, real power to flow from Delhi this summer

2 gas turbines of 250 MW each have been commissioned and 2 more gas turbines and 2 steam turbine units will be commissioned in the next year.

NEW DELHI: Years after depending on other states to meet its electricity demand, Delhi government has turned its focus on how to be self-sufficient on power supply. In its 2011-12 budget, it has proposed completion of several new projects — many of these had a Commonwealth Games deadline — in the current financial year and commissioning of new plants.

Two gas turbines of 250 MW each have been commissioned at Bawana and two more gas turbines and two steam turbine units of about 1000 MW each will be commissioned in the next financial year. Delhi is expected to get 70% of power generation from this project. Delhi is getting 250 MW power from the first unit of 500 MW coalbased Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Project at Jhajjar and another 500 MW shall be available from this project later this year. In total, 1700 MW power supply will be available from Bawana and Jhajjar plants

in the next financial year.

To meet the future demand, a 750MW gas-based power project is also being set up at Bamnauli at an estimated cost of Rs 3,022 crore which will be financed with 30% equity from Delhi government and 70% through loan. This project is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2013.
